HPE Teams with NVIDIA to Build Fast AI Supercomputer for AIST in Japan

By Greg Tavarez

Happy Friday, readers!

For this article, let’s discuss HPE, NVIDIA and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Japan, or AIST.

HPE, as most of you are aware of, is a technology company that helps businesses get the most out of their data. They offer various cloud-based and on-site solutions, including storage, software and computing. HPE says their products can help businesses improve performance and develop new ways of working.

NVIDIA is a major American technology company known for its expertise in GPUs, which are now fundamental for various applications including AI due to their powerful processing capabilities.

AIST, a major Japanese public research institute, develops technologies for industry and society. They aim to turn innovative ideas into practical applications and collaborate with other research institutes worldwide to achieve this.

So, why are we talking about the three?

HPE recently announced it will construct a next-generation supercomputer for AIST. The AIST supercomputer, dubbed AI Bridging Cloud Infrastructure 3.0, will be available as a cloud service and utilize NVIDIA technology to support advancements in generative AI research and development.

“Making AI accessible and inclusive is critical to bolstering innovation across industries and enhancing societal impact,” said Antonio Neri, president and CEO at HPE. "We are honored AIST selected HPE’s proven AI systems and expertise, combined with NVIDIA's industry-leading accelerated computing platform, to power its AI cloud service.

Designed to address the increasing computational demands of AI workloads, ABCI 3.0 will leverage HPE Cray XD systems equipped with NVIDIA H200 Tensor Core GPUs and NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking.

HPE Cray XD systems are the foundation for a powerful computing platform designed for demanding AI workloads. NVIDIA H200 Tensor Core GPUs are specialized processors excelling at the complex calculations needed for AI tasks.

To ensure smooth communication between these processors, the system also utilizes NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking. This high-speed network allows for the rapid exchange of data between the GPUs, maximizing the overall efficiency of the AI system.

In short, the combination of HPE Cray XD systems, NVIDIA H200 GPUs and NVIDIA Quantum-2 networking delivers exceptional performance for large-scale AI applications.

“AIST is maximizing the capabilities of ABCI 3.0 with unparalleled machine learning performance delivered through a powerful supercomputer,” said Dr. Yoshio Tanaka, executive officer, AIST. “We value our collaboration with HPE and NVIDIA to deliver AI cloud services that rapidly train large-scale foundational models built from ever-growing datasets of image, acoustic and sensor information, and we look forward to working more closely together to support the user community.”

With an anticipated peak performance of 6.2 exaflops at half-precision (16-bit), ABCI 3.0 is expected to become Japan's fastest AI supercomputer as it caters to the nation's growing need for computing resources in the field of AI.

“Every nation needs its own AI infrastructure to drive innovation and growth,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “Working alongside HPE and AIST, we will help Japan leverage its unique capabilities and data to boost productivity, invigorate its economy and advance scientific discovery.”

Be part of the discussion about the latest trends and developments in the Generative AI space at Generative AI Expo, taking place February 11-13, 2025, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Generative AI Expo discusses the evolution of GenAI and feature conversations focused on the potential for GenAI across industries and how the technology is already being used to create new opportunities for businesses to improve operations, enhance customer experiences, and create new growth opportunities.
