Back in June over on our Smart City Sentinel news site, I wrote about SiMa.ai and the two-pronged mission its team of 100+ industry experts is on.
The mission in question?
- Develop high-performance, software-centric, embedded edge machine learning (ML) services and system-on-chip (SoC) innovation.
- Disrupt the $10 trillion embedded edge market that is still largely reliant on decades-old technologies. (Especially since many of its competitors face challenges when scaling due to solutions that aren’t purpose-built for power efficiency.)
By collaborating with CVEDIA and Supermicro — read the full story on all three of these companies here — SiMa.ai is poised to help bring “new smart building solutions to the embedded edge.”
At the time, Elizabeth Samara-Rubio, Chief Business Officer of SiMa.ai stated that “SiMa.ai helps customers deploy high-performance AI/ML applications at the edge with a high bar for energy-efficiency and ease of use with partners. With SiMa.ai, customers can scale their AI/ML edge developments effortlessly with a single platform.”
Samara-Rubio isn’t wrong. And since then, SiMa.ai has already expanded this very platform. We wanted to share some of the details.
So, here’s a brief rundown:
Officially announced earlier this month, SiMa.ai unveiled its MLSoC Modalix, which has been described as “the industry’s first multimodal edge AI product family.”
MLSoC Modalix will reportedly equip developers with the resources they require to “push the envelope on performance with a small power envelope and physical footprint across a wide breadth of applications.” SiMa.ai is placing so much focus here because — it isn’t hard to see — the rise of GenAI is changing how we work with machines (and vice versa). What the company sees as “the next wave of the GenAI revolution” will ideally advance multimodal machines with the ability to understand and fully process multiple forms of inputs across text, image, audio and visual.
Thus, they’re getting ahead with this new MLSoC Modalix. (i.e. being able to run end to end GenAI application-pipelines on just a single chip while delivering measurable contributions to business top and bottom lines)
Here’s a key excerpt from SiMa.ai’s announcement:
“SiMa.ai MLSoC Modalix is the second generation of the successful, commercially deployed first generation MLSoC. MLSoC Modalix is offered in 25 (Modalix 25 or “M25”), 50 (Modalix 50 or “M50”), 100 (Modalix 100 or “M100”) and 200 (Modalix 200 or “M200”) TOPS configurations, in multiple form factors, and is purpose-built to provide effortless deployment of Generative AI for the embedded edge ML market. Fully software compatible with first generation MLSoC, the MLSoC Modalix product family was designed to enable the capability to run DNNs, as well as advanced Transformer models, including LLMs, LMMs and Generative AI. Samples of MLSoC Modalix will be available to customers in Q4 of 2024.”
And per Krishna Rangasayee, founder and CEO of SiMa.ai:
“We are leading the edge AI market and building increasing momentum as customers around the world continue to adopt our first-gen MLSoC. We are now so excited to introduce the MLSoC Modalix family to give customers even greater choice and flexibility to embrace multi-modal AI. With this introduction, SiMa.ai’s ONE Platform for Edge AI now provides coverage with industry-leading performance and substantial power efficiency.”
There’s a lot more to unpack here, especially when it comes to super technical details (e.g. edge framework, cutting-edge AI models, integrated modules, etc.), as well as several validating quotes from leaders from organizations like Advantech, LIPS, Synopsys, TSMC North America and others.
