Lumen and AWS: Building a Future-Ready Network Infrastructure for AI

By Greg Tavarez

AI transforms industries, from healthcare to finance, by automating processes, analyzing vast datasets and making data-driven decisions. However, traditional static networks are no longer sufficient to handle the dynamic and unpredictable nature of AI workloads.

Networks must be agile, scalable and intelligent. They need to adapt to fluctuating traffic patterns, accommodate diverse data types and provide low-latency connectivity for real-time AI applications.

Therefore, Lumen Technologies and Amazon Web Services reached an agreement to strengthen data center connectivity and optimize network delivery of cloud technologies for hundreds of millions of customers across the U.S.

Lumen plans to use AWS's technologies (such as AI, ML and security solutions) to revamp its existing applications and systems. This strategic move will not only streamline operations but also create innovation within its diverse range of communication, network, security and voice products.

Also, Lumen's Private Connectivity Fabric solution will offer dedicated fiber connections between AWS Regions and Local Zones. This will allow AWS to deploy its proprietary network technology to ensure top-tier security, reliability and speed between AWS locations.

The upgraded AWS network will facilitate high-bandwidth, dynamic connections to help customers create GenAI applications, train AI models and roll out innovative AI-powered products across AWS's extensive network of Regions and Local Zones.

"AI is reshaping industries, and the network infrastructure supporting it needs to be just as dynamic and responsive," said Kate Johnson, President and CEO, Lumen Technologies. "AWS wants their customers to thrive in the AI economy and this network expansion will help enable that. As the trusted network for AI, Lumen is using next-generation fiber to help AWS deliver high-bandwidth solutions that will allow their customers to experience and deliver AI's full potential."

Furthermore, Lumen will transition its IT and product platforms to AWS to enhance performance, scalability and operational efficiency. In the future, Lumen plans to use GenAI tools like Amazon Bedrock to optimize network resource planning. (Amazon Bedrock is a service that simplifies access to advanced AI models from top providers through a single API. It empowers developers to create cutting-edge generative AI applications with security, privacy and ethical AI safeguards. It will provide Lumen a complete view of its network, both on-premises and in the cloud, leading to improved customer experiences and reduced costs.)

"The next wave of innovation will be driven by generative AI, which requires a combination of secure, scalable cloud infrastructure and flexible networking," said Matt Garman, CEO of AWS. "By applying generative AI technologies like Amazon Bedrock, Lumen can transform its operations to enable faster decision-making and more autonomous, highly resilient networks.”

Lumen and AWS have been partners for years, and this recent agreement builds on that. As an AWS Managed Service Provider Partner, Lumen helps customers migrate workloads to AWS to ensure a smooth transition to their cloud infrastructure.

Be part of the discussion about the latest trends and developments in the Generative AI space at Generative AI Expo, taking place February 11-13, 2025, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Generative AI Expo covers the evolution of GenAI and will feature conversations focused on the potential for GenAI across industries and how the technology is already being used to create new opportunities for businesses to improve operations, enhance customer experiences, and create new growth opportunities.
